What Does a U-Joint Do?
Universal joints (also known as U-joints) are a key part of the driveline system of four-wheel drive (4WD), rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles. On certain cars, u-joints also link the front driveshaft to the front differential and transfer case. U-joints unite the driveshaft to the transmission and differential. The U-joint's adaptable connection allows the driveline to adjust angle as the vehicle traverses various terrains.
How Long Do Universal Joints Last?
U-joints are made to last a long time, but as a vehicle ages, they will experience wear and strain. The likelihood of needing to replace your vehicle's u-joints increases if you drive it for a considerable amount of time.
Why Do U-Joints Fail?
Normal Wear and Tear
Even with regular use, universal joints ultimately wear out and need to be replaced. The rate of wear on your car can be influenced by how you use it. U-joints may deteriorate more quickly in cars that are off-road or are used for towing.
Improper lubrication or maintenance
Certain U-joints need lubricant to function at their best. These U-joints might dry out and bind if they aren't properly oiled and maintained.
Loose Bolts
Corrosion, vibration or improper installation can cause the bolts that that hold the u-joints in place to become loose. If these bolts come loose or fall out, it can cause u-joint failure.
Alignment Issues
The driveshaft can get misaligned for a variety of reasons, such as adding bigger tires or a lift kit, or altering the rear differential or transmission mounting. This could result in excessive vibration, which could harm the u-joint.
Driveshaft Damage
Vibration at greater speeds can result from even tiny damage, such as a tiny dent in the driveshaft. The premature wear of the u-joints may result from this vibration.
Symptoms of a Bad Universal Joint
There are some signs that a universal joint is failing:
Clunking Noise
A common symptom of a failing u-joint is a loud clunking sound when putting the car into drive or reverse.
Vibration
An further indication of a malfunctioning universal joint is excessive vibration experienced inside the car. The worn u-joint shakes with enough force that vibrations are sensed within the cabin as the driveshaft rotates.
Squeaking Noise
A squeaking noise while driving could be a universal joint that isn't properly lubricated. The sound will change depending on your speed.
Can You Drive with a Failing U-Joint?
You should have your car checked out by an auto expert as soon as possible if you think you may have a faulty universal joint or any other problem with your steering and suspension system. Inadequate resolution of the issue may result in harm to additional elements.
