What is Knurled Pins?
Knurled pins are pins with many small grooves, or serrations, around their diameter. It is often necessary for the purpose of assembly, retention or function for the knurl to be custom designed. Knurled pins typically have a greater number of serrations than grooved pins, offering superior fastening capacity. For this reason, knurled pins are often used to assemble different components, particularly hinge applications and in applications that are subject to vibration.

Knurled pins are similar to grooved pins in that they contain serrations around the diameter; however, knurled pins have many more serrations. They are press fit fasteners that extrude radial forces when forced into a hole to hold the fastener in place.
Standards Of Knurled Pins
Appearance quality
During the knurling process, the roller is mainly used to press and rub the surface of the product, so the surface of the product needs to be smooth, without scratches, unevenness, and obvious color differences.
Pattern effect
The knurling pin needs to achieve the expected pattern effect, such as using the knurling pin to form regular convex and concave, patterns, patterns, letters, etc. on the surface of the product.
Specification size
The knurling pin needs to be adjusted according to the different specifications and sizes of the product to ensure that the size and geometry of the product after knurling meet the requirements.
Production efficiency
The knurling pin also needs to ensure production efficiency, that is, to improve production efficiency as much as possible and reduce production costs while ensuring quality.
The method of installing knurled pins mainly includes installation with a rubber hammer. During the installation process, it is necessary to pay attention to the knurling position of the pin to ensure correct alignment and fixation. This method is suitable for application scenarios where the position and depth of the pin need to be precisely controlled.
Side pin: One or more pins are punched around the part to limit its forward, backward, left and right movement, usually used to control the surface in two directions. This method is suitable for situations where the movement of the part needs to be restricted, but a large amount of finishing may be required.
Blind pin: The pin hole does not penetrate, and the part is positioned by setting a line between two points. This method requires that the holes and hole positions of the two parts must be accurate to ensure that the pin can be installed correctly.
Pin matching shape: Punch a nail hole on one plate and make a groove on the other plate. The groove width is equal to the pin diameter to achieve the positioning of the part. This method is suitable for application scenarios that require precise matching.
Guide pin: Used to more effectively deal with the positioning of two active parts and provide a more stable connection.
For the installation of rolled elastic cylindrical pins, the following methods can be used:
Using a hammer: After manually aligning the pin and the hole, drive the pin into the hole like a nail until the desired insertion depth is reached, taking care not to damage the body. This method is suitable for making a few component prototypes or for the first time to drive a rolled cylindrical pin.
Using a press or air hammer with a pin drive chuck: First, fix the pin drive chuck in the press or air hammer, then insert the rolled cylindrical pin into the end of the pin drive chuck, and then insert the exposed end of the pin into the hole, push the press handle or start the air Q to complete the installation. This method is suitable for small to medium batch production, providing higher efficiency and better cost control.

Prepare tools
Before installing the knurled cylindrical pin, you need to prepare the necessary tools, including steel hammer, pointer, locating pin fixture, etc.
Installation order
Choose the appropriate knurled cylindrical pin size and clean it according to the installation requirements. Insert the cylindrical pin into the locating hole and tap it with a steel hammer to evenly distribute the pin stress. Set a pointer at the end of the pin to judge whether the insertion depth of the pin is correct. Finally, fix it with a locating pin fixture.
Precautions
a. Before installation, ensure that the surface of the pin hole and the pin is clean and free of impurities and other substances that affect the accuracy.
b. Choose the appropriate pin size, generally the pin diameter is slightly smaller than the hole diameter by 0.01-0.02mm.
c. During the installation process, try to avoid direct contact with the knurled cylindrical pin with your hands to prevent hand oil contamination.
d. When inserting the pin hole, ensure verticality without deflection or tilt.
e. The installation pressure should be uniform and should not be too large or too small, especially in occasions with high assembly requirements.

Installation and use of Knurled Pins
Clamp the knurled pin: Connect the knurled pin to the workpiece and clamp it on the chuck. Be careful not to bend or twist it.
Adjust the clamping force: After clamping the knurled pin, adjust the clamping force to ensure the stability of the tool and the processing accuracy. Insufficient clamping force will lead to excessive cutting force, increase tool wear and machine tool load, and excessive clamping force will lead to too small cutting force and reduce processing accuracy.
Start processing: Place the workpiece on the machine tool and process it according to the direction and speed of the tool. Pay attention to the distance and safety between the tool and the workpiece during processing.
Different Knurling Tools For Knurled Pins Finish
Knurling Wheels
Knurling wheels are the most commonly used tools for metal knurling. They usually comprise two or more hardened steel wheels with opposing slanting knurl patterns. These wheels are typically attached to a knurling tool and pressed against the rotary workpiece to produce the preferred knurl pattern.
Knurling Inserts
These are specialized tools that can be fixed on a lathe for machining. Knurling inserts have a particular knurl pattern programmed to produce the preferred knurled finish. The inserts are usually available in varying patterns and sizes, made of carbide or high-speed steel.
Knurling Dies
These dies are tools used in turret lathes or CNC turning services to achieve knurled patterns on cylindrical objects. Knurling dies are made of high-speed steel, and their knurling patterns cut into the inner surface of an object. You have to mount them on a knurling tool holder and rotate it against a workpiece to create desired knurled patterns.
Push-Type Knurling Tools
Push-type knurling tools are hand-held knurling tools that use manual force to make knurled patterns. The push-type tools typically consist of a knurling wheel attached to a handle which aids its movement along the workpiece’s surface to make the desired knurling texture. They are compatible with low-volume or manual operations.
Floating Knurling Tools
This knurling tooling is suitable for making patterns and ridges on contoured or irregular surfaces. These tools adapt to the workpiece’s shape, ensuring a consistent and accurate knurled finish. The floating tools utilize articulated arms or spring-loaded mechanisms, allowing the knurling wheels to align with the surface contours.
Carefully Prepare the Workpiece
Irregularities, contaminations, or misalignments can hinder the quality of the intended knurling patterns. Therefore, clean the workpiece, secure it properly, and ensure it has the correct dimensions before beginning the knurling process.
Choose the Appropriate Knurling Tool
Choosing the knurling tools that fit the desired patterns and material is crucial. Knurling tooling comprises varying tooth configurations, pitches, and patterns. Therefore, using the ideal tool for the material’s hardness and the intended surface finish is advisable.
Apply Lubrication
Ensure that the knurling tooling and workpiece receive appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant during the operation. It reduces heat generation, friction, and tool wear, producing a smooth, knurled finish.
Optimal Cutting Speed
Knurling metal at the right speed reduces tool wear while ensuring proper chip formation. Therefore, it is advisable to determine the ideal lathe cutting tool and cutting speed based on the knurled metal. Refer to the manufacturer’s directions or the machining recommendations for a specific material.
Adequate Tool Pressure
Excessive pressure can damage or deform the knurled workpiece, while inadequate pressure can cause a shallow pattern. You must use the right amount of pressure when knurling a workpiece. However, ensure the tool pressure matches the material and the knurling tool specifications.
How does the Knurled Pins process work?
Knurled Pins is usually done using one or more very rigid rollers that contain the opposite side of the pattern to be applied. „Straight” (non-cross) knurling can be extruded with a single roller, but the material must be properly supported to avoid distortion. The cross pattern can be obtained by any of the following methods:
Arming a single roll containing the complete reverse of the desired pattern. You can use them to create „male” or „female” patterns.
Roll the piece straight to the left, then straight to the right (or vice versa), one or more left scrolls being used simultaneously with one or more right scrolls.
Use a flask with a pitch that is a multiple of the circumference or a pitch with a diameter greater than π. The diameter of the blanks is crucial for high-quality knurling. An improper blank diameter will cause double knurling, resulting in a finer pattern than the knurling was designed for.
In order for the Knurled Pins to look correct without double tracking, you must match the diameter of the flask to the knurling stroke. This is very similar to having two matching gears with the same diameter. Each time a tooth is added, the diameter increases by a discrete amount. There is no intermediate diameter that will work. The same is true for knurling and knurling flasks, although fortunately knurling tolerates a certain amount of error before problems arise. The total number of knurls for a given diameter will usually be repeated three times from the bottom to the top of the pattern. Unlike knurling cuts, the spacing between cuts is not preset and can be adjusted to allow the total number of patterns to be created around the workpiece, regardless of the diameter of the workpiece.
The hand Knurled Pins tools provided are similar to pipe cutters, but contain knurling wheels instead of cutting wheels. Typically, the tool is carried on three wheels: two left and one right, or vice versa.
Cutting Knurled Pins often adopt automatic feeding. Cutting knurl tooling is similar to rolling knurl, except that the knurl has sharp edges and corners and is set at a certain angle to the workpiece to allow sharp edges and corners to cut the workpiece. Corner, diamond and linear knurling is not possible because lathe wheels cannot withstand such longitudinal speeds, and also because reasonable cutting speeds cannot be achieved.
