There are two aspects to consider for bearing rollers

For the bearing roller, the contact stress between the end face of the bearing roller and the rib must be taken into account, which can be calculated with the relevant formula. One of the most commonly used design methods for bearing rollers is that the end face of the bearing roller is flat, and there will be an arc chamfer where it is connected to the convex part of the shape of the roller, and the rib can also be a part of the plane.

However, when a thrust load is required between the bearing roller end face of the bearing roller and the rib, the rib is sometimes designed as a tapered surface. In this case, the chamfer of the roller will be in contact with the rib, and the angle between the rib and the radial plane is called the rib inclination.

In addition, the roller end surface of the bearing roller can also be designed as a spherical surface, so that the spherical end surface of the roller is in contact with the inclined rib. This structure helps to improve lubrication, but it will reduce the guide ability of the rib to the roller. In this case, the skew of the rollers must be controlled by the cage to ensure the normal operation of the bearing.

For ease of calculation, it can be assumed that the radius of the sphere is equal to the radius of the spherical end face of the roller, while the radius of the cylinder can be approximated by the radius of curvature of the tapered rib at the theoretical contact point. Contact stresses and deformations can be calculated based on known elastic contact loads, material properties of the rollers and ribs, and contact geometry parameters.

However, the contact stress between the roller end face and the rib of the bearing roller calculated by this method can only be approximated, because the liquid end face and the rib do not satisfy the assumption of half space. Also, the radius of curvature of the tapered rib is not constant, but varies along the contact width. Therefore, this method is only suitable for the contact between the complete spherical liquid end face and the conical rib.
