How A Bad U-Joint Affects The Other One
U-joints are X-shaped pieces made of robust steel that have a single bearing cap on each end. U-joints allow the driveshaft to rotate smoothly when linked to the differential and transfer case (or transmission). They allow the driveline to bend with reduced friction.
When a u-joint fails, the driveshaft moves away from its regular rotating path. This causes excessive vibration and friction. This not only worsens the failed u-joint, but it also harms the other u-joint. Both u-joints will sustain damage, such as:

All u-joints require lubrication. Grease allows the u-joints to move easily. The lubricant also protects the u-joint from corrosion and moisture. Over time, the u-joint wears out, causing greater friction within the joint. The increased friction causes heat to accumulate in the u-joints. When this happens, the grease deteriorates. The u-joints lose lubrication, and the seals wear out.
The first u-joint that fails causes more damage than the second u-joint. So many people believe that the second u-joint is still fine. The truth is that the second u-joint is already beginning to fail. So, if you need to replace a u-joint, always replace both. If you don't, the other one will fail eventually. The failure of that u-joint will damage the new u-joint (which replaced the original one). It's always best to replace both u-joints at once.
