What is a floating dowel?
Floating alignment pins are also known as compatible pins. They are used in high speed sheet metal assembly. Floating pins eliminate hole damage in aluminum parts and greatly reduce pin wear in high-strength steel components. By using floating pins, all pins can be round 4-way pins.
Floating dowels are used in the following applications:
Aluminum parts/floating dowel pins are better than retracted pins/no hole damage/no aluminum buildup on pins
High Strength Martensitic Steel Parts / Minimizes pin wear by relieving side pressure during part unloading
End effector/Eliminate pusher/Eliminate panel damage by loosening the pin to make the part fall off
Multiple 4-pin functions on the same part for easy loading
Allows easy removal of long weld cycle parts with deformations up to +3mm
Eliminates need for 2-way pins and sockets
