Dowel pins, also referred to simply as dowel pins, are short cylindrical parts that connect two or more objects. They are inserted into pre-cut holes, thus connecting objects. While all dowels are designed for connecting objects, they come in many different types. Here are five important things to consider when choosing a dowel.
#1) Materials
When selecting a dowel, you need to consider the material. Wooden dowels are commonly used in furniture and woodworking applications, while metal dowels are commonly used in machines and equipment. You can find metal dowels made of stainless steel, carbon steel, and hardened alloys.
#2) Dimensions
Dowels come in a variety of different sizes. For a set of dowels to connect two or more objects, they must be the correct size. If the dowel is too long, you won't be able to insert it all the way into the object. On the other hand, if it's too short, the dowels may not be able to hold things together. Evaluate the objects you plan to use them for, and choose the correct size dowels.
#3) Thread Type
Thread type should also be considered when selecting a dowel. Locating pins can have fine or coarse threads. Coarse threads mean fewer notches or pitches for the dowels. In contrast, a fine thread means that the dowel has more notches or spacing. Which thread type should you choose? It really depends on the application. If you are using them to attach objects with fine threads, you should choose dowels with fine threads. For coarse-threaded objects, the opposite is true, and you should choose coarse-threaded dowels.
#4) Thread size
In addition to the thread type, also pay attention to the size of the dowel thread. Locating pins are usually designed with a specific size thread. Some of these have 1/16" threads. Others have 3/32" threads. As mentioned above, the thread of the dowel should match the object you intend to use it for.
#5) Customization
Finally, you may want to consider customization when selecting dowel pins. With customization, you are not limited to any specific size. Instead, you can order a set of custom-sized dowel pins for a perfect fit. Not all applications require the use of custom sized dowels. If the object has a standard and uniform thread, you can use a standard set of dowels. However, for other applications, custom sized dowels may be required.
