What is a dowel pin?

Dowel pins are often used to join different components together or as precise locating devices in machinery.

 

Before selecting the dowel pin for your application, it's necessary to know the different types of pins and their fit types.

 

Fit type

1. Standard fit

Standard fit, also called slip fit, means the standard fit dowel pins fit smoothly into the hole with little to no friction.

 

2. Oversized fit

Oversized dowel pins, also called press fit or interference fit, are slightly larger than the hole.

 

Most users choose 303 or 18-8 stainless steel dowels because of their high corrosion resistance.

416 Stainless Steel Dowels also work well in a variety of applications, but may experience some discoloration in corrosive environments. This material also has a higher Rockwell hardness than 303 stainless steel dowels.

Alloy Steel Dowels have high strength but will rust in corrosive environments. Steel set pins with a chrome, zinc or black oxide finish can improve corrosion resistance, but not at the same level as stainless steel.
